Our Pictures, Then and Now
This page last updated: 14 June 2010 @ 10:03 pm
Below are our graduation pictures along with a current shot, some 50 years later... along with a short profile. The inputs come from you or your loved ones... You DON'T want us to make something up.
The list of names below includes, to our ability, anyone who attended classes with us in the Coronado school system anytime from kindergarden through high school.
Tell us what you've been doing since graduation (about 200 words or so) and send me a recent picture... I will add it to our collection below. CLICK HERE to email me your profile and picture(s).
Don't try to type your information directly onto the website, it won't work. You have to send me the information and I will then add it to the site.
Most of the pictures below in the "1960 Pic" column are from our 1960 CHS yearbook. If you did not graduate from Coronado, I don't have your graduation picture... However, we still want your "Then" picture. If you want it posted here, please send me your graduation picture along with a current photo.
A lot of the first names are listed as presented in the yearbook. If you want your name listed differently send me an email. The ladies are listed by maiden names along with their married name, if we know it, in parentheses ( ). |
 |
I've included those Classmates who have passed away. If any loved one or friend has information about those who have passed, please send it in. Spouses and family of those who have died are cordially invited to join us. CLICK HERE for a page listing all who are gone.
Let me know if I have a typo or an incorrect name or any other update... Changes are easy to make.
CLICK HERE to send me your pictures and profiles.
Help us find our missing classmates. CLICK HERE to see who we can't find.

Margie Baker (Moen):
I was born a Navy Junior during a WWII blackout in Honolulu, and have been traveling ever since. Upon graduating from San Jose State University, I spent the summer living with a family in Guadalajara and traveled extensively throughout Mexico. A teaching job in Carmel, CA awaited me on my return, and I enjoyed exploring the Monterrey Peninsula, but this became too cold and foggy, so I left to tour Europe for a couple of months. I then landed a teaching job in warm, beautiful Hawaii. There I married, had two beautiful daughters (Maile and Cassie), built a house on the North Shore, and sailed the islands. After a divorce, the girls and I moved to Pacific Beach, CA to be near family and friends. Life changed again when I remarried a wonderful man named Mike. We enjoyed camping, hiking and sailing - we even lived on our boat for a year and sailed the Sea of Cortez. We had 20 years of adventures before he had a fatal heart attack 2.5 years ago. I still travel: Machu Picchu, Hawaii and Turkey most recently. My four precious granddaughters (2, 4, 5 & 5) coax me to San Francisco and Austin every few months. So life is good, and I look forward to seeing my friends from CHS class of 60 very soon! |

Joan Bauslaugh (Gundlach): I grew up in the SF Bay Area before coming to Coronado in 1958, and returned north to attend UC Berkeley and graduate from UC Davis in 1966 with a degree in art and interior design. I married my first husband, Robert Malloy, while at Davis and have two children, Beck and Lisa. We lived in San Jose, CA after his graduation from vet school where he practiced large animal medicine in Carmel Valley and in Salinas, while I was in nursing school and worked in the veterinarian hospital we built at our home. We divorced in 1977 and my children and I moved to Coeur d'Alene (CdA), ID, where I worked as an RN in both medical surgery and psychiatric areas for over 25 years. Bill Gundlach and I were married in 1985 and have enjoyed a wonderful life together, largely spent in outdoor pursuits and travel, especially after he retired from civil engineering. Our first two years of married life were spent in Yuma, AZ and I even lived with my Mom in Coronado, while my daughter went to CHS in spring semester of 1984 prior to a year in France with Youth for Understanding. After an extended trip to the SE U.S., Bill and I returned to CdA, remodeled a house and have been there ever since. Between us we have four grandchildren. My son, Beck lives two hours southeast of us, Lisa in southern CO, and Bill's son Eric, 10 minutes west of here in Post Falls. Our travels have taken us north to the tundra rivers of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, and this year we are going to the north slope of Alaska for a 15 day canoe trip on the Kokolik River by ourselves. My hobbies include making beaded jewelry and gardening, and we are both involved with our local Audubon club. |

Graduated from Univ of Utah with BS Nursing. Married Jim Mason. I worked in Salt Lake City Veterans Hospital. We retired to Port Townsend, WA intending to get a sailboat. I am program director for our Audubon Society and volunteer as a Master Gardener. And of course visit with the children and grandkids. I’m especially looking forward to a visit (or two or three) to the Island Beer Club. Is there a dress code? Now, if I can just lose those 10 pounds before the reunion. |

Myles Chace*:
In 1950 the U.S. Navy moved our family to Coronado, where I attended third grade through sixth grade. In 1954 the Navy moved us to Washington, DC, returning us to Coronado in 1959. I attended CHS until April of 1960, when I enlisted into the U.S. Navy. I served honorably for three years, obtaining my discharge in May 1963. I started my college career in June of '63 at Palomar College. It was there I met my wife, Susie, of 45 years. In '66 we moved to San Diego to continue my studies in mathematics and Voc. Ed,, where I received my B.A. degree from San Diego State in 1969. I began my working career in metallurgical engineering the same year. In 1976 we sold our San Diego home and bought a home in Coronado, where we lived for 32 years and raise our two sons, Andy (CHS '91) and David (CHS '99). We were very active in the community, with many organizations too numerous to list here. In 2008 I retired and moved to Fallbrook, CA, Susie's hometown. I still consider Coronado my hometown. In 2009, I was diagnosed with bladder cancer, severe anemia and kidney failure. I am now recovering from two operations, radiation and chemotherapy. I am anxiously looking forward to our 50th reunion. |

Carolyn Craven (Zerboni)*: Like many of us from Navy families, I attended Coronado High for only a few years. After I married Joe, we came to Coronado often to see see his mom, and I consider Coronado my high school "home." Bob Isely, who was best man at my wedding and is godfather of our children, made sure I came to the reunions. Marriage didn't work out, but we do divorce well. Joe, Hanneke and I--a big, extended family--share happy times with our children and grandchildren. I found the place I had always been looking for in Ladera, near Stanford University; it's been my family home for 34 years. I taught English 1A, English IB, Asian 1B and International Film in the West Valley-Mission College District. Because many of my students were refugees and immigrants, I studied Filipino and Vietnamese Literature in order to try to preserve the students' literary culture. Exhausted, I retired in 2003 and love my "new" life of friends and family. Each day I wake and say, "This is my life, the place I have always been looking for." |

Maria DeLaSalas: After graduating from CHS, I met (at San Diego State) and married a Norwegian student. We moved up to Berkeley where he received his Ph/d., had our first daughter and moved to Paris for a year. We traveled throughout Europe and lived in Norway for 2 years where I learned to downhill and cross-country ski and speak Norwegian. We eventually returned to Berkeley where we lived for many years. After the divorce, I returned to complete my BA and MPA. I worked 22 yrs at the Alameda County Medical Ctr, as a Spanish Medical Interpreter, Coordinator of Bilingual Services, and as Director of the ACMC Volunteer Program. Other projects included: Curator of Art (Beautification Project), Community Liaison, Cultural Diversity training, started a consulting business (with a co-worker) on Hispanic Health Care training. I'm currently single, have two wonderful, beautiful and successful daughters, and four bright grandchildren. I'm retired, tutor Eng. and reside in the Boston area where one daughter and youngest grandchildren live. My other daughter and family live in Oregon. Sometimes life after High School is not what you expect, but, life is an exciting adventure and continues... even after retirement. Look forward to seeing all in June.

Fifty years ago this month, I was not on the stage with the rest of you and will miss the ceremony again on June 10, as we will be winging our way home from Europe. We will however, be home in time for all the other festivities and look forward to seeing you all. Fifty one years ago I married, finished the last two credits to get my HS diploma and gave birth to my first son, Mark, who is now a S.D. Bay Pilot (he brings large ships in and out of the harbor), is married to Sandy and the father of 5 year old twins (Sam and Dana).Second son, Matt, has two sons and works for the State Dept. and is on his way Kyrgyzstan soon. Third son, Scott, is married to Kathy and they have a 7 year old son, Jett. Scott is a really terrific building contractor here in Coronado. Living vicariously, I’m proud to say that between the three of them, one is a semi-pro motorcycle racer, one a professional skydiver and one a surfer of big waves and deep free diver.
My career, besides stay at home mom, early on, was Real Estate Sales in Hawaii and California, modeling which lead into doing TV commercials for 30 years and for the past 23 years, owner of Square On Frames, custom picture framing. My husband Steve and I have been married for nearly 10 years (together 22 yrs.) and enjoy travel, skiing, gardening, exercising, yoga, theater, entertaining, learning, reading, community clubs (Rotary/Soroptimist) and our church (Coronado Community Church) |

Mary Flynn (Palley): While I have fond memories of my days in Coronado I saw the world in a whole
new light on February 15, 1968 when my only child, John, was born. My son
was always there to remind me of things like the fact that it took 7 years
for me to get through my undergraduate studies at UCLA, with a grade point
average lower than his high school grades, and that I had to drop out of law
school when he was born. However, with the encouragement of my husband
Michael, who was an attorney, I went back to law school and graduated from
UCLA in 1980. Michael died in 1982 which led me to a new chapter of life.
Luckily for me, my son John was there to help guide me through those tough
years. Excluding one hiccup, which caused me to move from West Los Angeles
to Eastern Tennessee in 1985 (long story don¹t ask), I met a great man on an
airplane in 1987. I later married Dell and moved to Northern Utah which is
where we still live. Along the way I have retired from the practice of law
but have remained very active in my community. I have served on the board
of our local domestic violence non-profit for over 20 years now. I also was
a member of the Democratic National Committee and a delegate at the 2004
National Convention. I also have enjoyed becoming a part of my husband's
large family (remember, he¹s from Utah) over the years. More recently my
son married a wonderful woman and they have produced the two cutest
grandkids in the world who I enjoy immensely. I look forward to seeing you
all at the reunionS so I can show you pictures of my grandkids, Michael and
Emily! -Mary Flynn Palley (by her ghostwriter) |

Jocelyn Foster (Brierton): After CHS I attended UCLA, University of Madrid, and graduated from San Diego State. I have stayed in the San Diego area. I guess that appealed to me after all the moving around being a Navy junior. I have two daughters—one is a teacher and the other a doctor—and two grandsons. One lives a block from me and the other two miles. I was in business for myself for a number of years before Mike Russ talked me into working for him at Mike Russ Schools. I taught real estate and insurance classes and wrote a lot of material used by the school including a life insurance textbook. After 19 1/2 years of working there, I stopped working this last March. I guess I will find plenty to do with my free time and I am looking forward to it. |

Janice Friddle (Holcombe): Ten years after I married my high school sweetheart (Brad CHS ’58), we moved overseas. I lived the “trailing spouse” lifestyle in Australia and the UK for twenty-two years. As a long-term expat I helped new arrivals appreciate the delights of overseas living. Guiding new friends to castles, pubs, and local sights was a charmed way to use my geography degree. British Girl Guides was my primary volunteer commitment. Scores of girls learned to camp and cook in our back yard. Before leaving the UK we acquired dual USA/UK citizenship. We often yearn for our British friends and the likes of London and Scotland’s “Malt Whisky Trail.” A 1995 transfer to Houston hastened our retirement to idyllic White Salmon, Washington. We love this beautiful area in the Columbia River Gorge. These days we play duplicate bridge and do a lot of traveling on west coast highways to visit our three lovely daughters and two adorable grandchildren in Coronado, Portland and Seattle. It will be brilliant to see all of you at our 50th reunion events! |

Stephen Fulton: After CHS I spent 8 years in the US Air Force as a computer programmer / analyst. I spent 5 years at Luke AFB in Phoenix, AZ and 3 years in Washington DC. While in the service I attended college graduating from Glendale College with a degree in Business Admin. I graduated from Pacific Coast Banking School at the University of Washington with a masters level degree in commercial banking. I spent 38 years as a commercial banker. During these years I lived in AZ (6 years), Alaska (15 years), OR (10 yrs)and Washington (7 yrs), finally retiring in June of 2006. I have a wife (Sandy) of 47 yrs, 2children (Scott & Brenda), 8 grandchildren (Rhianna, Alexsandra, Stephanie, Harley, Scotty, Larisa, Marcus & Goefrey) and 2 great grandchildren (Jaxsen & Chloe). I returned to my family roots and now live in Shenandoah, IA. My Dad always told me he was busier after he retired than he was when he was working. I now understand what he meant. I mow my lawn (1/4 acre), my folks farm (3.5 acres) and our church (5 acres) every week. In the winter I keep our whole block snow free with my snow blower. Both my wife and I volunteer at a nursing home, providing crafts and activities for the residents twice a month. In my spare time, I enjoy woodworking projects with my commercial scroll saw. Oh yes, I also do the bulletin for our church weekly and produce a pictorial directory every year. |

Robert Gray: After graduation and a summer pushing a lawnmower for Lloyd Dong and his dad, I followed my brothers Pete and Steen to MIT, where I got my BS and MS in 1966. As an undergrad I worked as a government intern as part of a coop program in Washington DC, and traveled to Europe for the first time in 1963, picking grapes in the vendange in Chablis and busking in Paris. In 1966 I went to USC for my PhD, working at JPL for two summers and playing guitar in a band along with Rob Taylor, another CHS grad. I finished in 1969 and came to Stanford where I have been on the faculty ever since. I am currently a Professor of Electrical Engineering and a faculty affiliate of the Michelle Clayman Institute for Gender Research. My wife Lolly and I have lived in La Honda since 1970, with occasional sabbaticals in Japan, France, and Italy. We have two kids and six grandkids. Noel Hale (Solomon): My husband Ed and I are now both retired. Ed's first career was as an Air Force officer; his second was with an aerospace company. Motivation for the latter was our children's desire to attend graduate school. Lesley, 42, is an attorney. She and her husband have one child. Yes, he is our "adorable" five year old grandson, Alex. Our single son, John, 39,has a masters' degree in film from U.C.L.A. This September he will begin his fourth year as a writer for Saturday Night Live. This summer he is working on the screenplay for an upcoming comedy film — McGruber. In 1997 I retired from teaching fitness classes at a local community college. I took care of my Dad until his death in 1998. It is to his Naval career that I give thanks for two tours in Coronado. The first was grades three to five (during which he frightened Wayne 0!! He caught us stealing a kiss in our closet!) and the second my junior and senior years at CHS.

We moved to New York where Michael worked for the United Nations. In 1971 my second daughter, Natasha was born. Six months after her birth we moved to India where I lived for two years. After my divorce, I moved to Tiburon, CA (Marin Co.) where I lived for 25 years. I had several sales jobs and raised my girls in that beautiful town near San Francisco. In 1998 I returned to my favorite place in the world, Coronado. Shortly after my move, I met Jack Corzine. We married in 2004 and we moved to a 5 acre ranch in Menifee (Riverside Co.). In the spring of 2007 we sold the ranch and moved back to my beloved Coronado. Jack passed away two months after our return to Coronado. I now live and work in Coronado. I am a real estate agent for Coldwell Banker. Let me know if I can assist you or your family or friends in Real Estate in Coronado or the San Diego area. My girls live in Fountain Hills, AZ along with my dear grandson, Jacob who is now in third grade. I am honored to be a co-chair of our 50th High School Reunion and I look forward to seeing many of my class mates. It will be lots of fun. |

Mary "Dennie" Kington (Heath):
Following graduation, I spent a wonderful year in Japan with my family and then returned to the US where I obtained a BA degree from UC Berkeley. I married David Heath, and the two of us spent two years in southern India as Peace Corps Volunteers. Following that I completed a Master of Library and Information Science degree from UCB, then spent 3 years in the UCB School of Information Sciences' PhD program. I worked as a UCB Librarian and then as a computer programmer in the UCB Library Systems Office. In 1988 I became Head of the UC Davis Library's Systems Department, where I remained for 12 years. In 2000 I moved to the UC Office of the President's California Digital Library as a programmer and technical manager; while there I worked on a number of projects that provided online information services for faculty and students on the University of California campuses. I retired from the UC system in 2008 and then worked as a project manager for the Boston Library Consortium, implementing a consortial borrowing system for their 19 member libraries. I retired completly in July 2009 and now spend my time working on a variety of visual arts projects, reading, watching movies, and working puzzles. |

Jim Knox*: I actually spent my last year of high school in Seattle and graduated from Queen Anne. The following year I attended junior college in San Jose and worked various construction jobs in the summer. In 1963 I joined the marines and became a radio repair tech, finishing with a tour in Viet Nam. Upon discharge I finished an A.S. degree in electronics, met and married my beloved wife Marsha of 43 years and became a staff engineer at UCSD in the Linguistics Dept. As a staff member the university foolishly allowed me to take enough courses to graduate with degrees in both Communications and Visual Arts in 1977. Over the years my sales career went from broadcast television products to computer manufacturing and aerospace test products. I currently work from home as a health and life insurance broker and specialize in the medicare and senior market. We have two sons Jeff (40) and David (37). Jeff’s son Jake is 15 and David has two daughters Zoey (4) and Lindsey (1). We’ve lived in the same home in San Diego (Tierrasanta) for 38 years and we’re in the phone book. We spend the month of July at “Shore Acres” our summer cabin on the Hood Canal in WA, so you’ll have to call the cell phone 858-775-0101 |

Linda "Ruchama" Madden (Burrell):
Fridays, just before sunset, I light nine Shabbat Candles: for my three children, for my husband's three; for our collective grand-daughters (10), grandsons (7) and one for others who cannot light for themselves. The following 25 hours are spent in celebration, prayer, meditation, rest and reflection. Sometimes I reflect on my journey to Berkeley. After freshman year at a Catholic women's college in Denver, I planned to enter a Franciscan Monastery. My parents convinced me to spend a year at Seattle University. There I married, marched against the War in Viet Nam and graduated with a degree in English Literature and Philosophy in 1965. In 1969, I took a Greyhound Bus with three children under the age of five back to Coronado. For the next few years I had a lovely romance (thanks for the memories) and worked as a legal secretary. By 1974 I had remarried and entered California Western School of Law. Graduating in 1977, I moved to San Diego. My marriage ended in 1984. In 1985 I took another Greyhound to San Francisco. There I connected with my Jewish roots, converted and became officially a "member of the tribe." I took on a Jewish name "Ruchama" (Compassion). In 1990 I married my "Bashert" (soulmate). Both of us are retired, passionate about progressive politics and deeply religious. Torah study and religious practice form the center of our life together. Our favorite mitzvah is hospitality to guests. Anyone who lives near or travels to the Bay Area is welcome to join us and our guests at our open Shabbat table any Friday night. I've come to believe that everyone has a bashert, a true path and a true home. The fortunate find them. I'm grateful every day. I'm also serious about the invitation. We'd love to welcome anyone who comes by. |

Paulette Martin (Thompson): A back injury followed by surgery in 1961 inspired me to become a nurse. I entered the four year nursing program at San Diego State in 1962 and graduated in January 1966. In my last year of college (1965), I met and married Jerry Becker, a Navy pilot. We divorced 15 years later but are the proud parents of two sons: Erick, a sheriff and Iraq war veteran living in Houston; and Garth, an internal medicine specialist practicing in Miami, FL. Following my divorce in 1980, I entered University of San Diego and graduated in 1983 with a Master's degree in nursing. My two sons decided to spend more time with their father, so this left me some options I never expected to have. In 1987 I was offered a nursing position as a shift manager at a 350 bed hospital in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Saudi Aramco is the largest oil company in the world and is located on the Persian Gulf. "The Road Less Traveled" celebrated by poet Robert Frost describes my decision to live and work in a country still largely closed to tourism and having a culture and religion so opposite our own. I worked with nurses and physicians from all over the world and came to appreciate their differences as well as coming to understand what is good about Arab culture. I was in Saudi Arabia during Saddam's invasion of Kuwait, the Gulf War, and the Khobar Towers terrorist bombing that injured and killed 18 US troops. I gave up much to go on my Middle East adventure, but it rewarded me richly with an intensity of experience few people ever encounter. In 1992 I met Paul Thompson, an Aramco ophthalmologist. I resigned from my position in Aramco in early 2000 and married Paul in San Diego in November 2000. We now live on Whidbey Island, North of Seattle. We love this unique community of people and delight in the beauty, peacefulness, and even the rain of a place still largely unspoiled. |

After attending CHS for my Junior and Senior years, I left for UCSB. Four years later I joined United Airlines as a Stewardess. Based in San Francisco, I took a leave of absence and finished my degree in Sociology at UC Berkeley. I returned to UAL, married, and took on the supervision of the MAC/Honolulu operation which entailed trips to Japan and Vietnam. When my first son Craig was born, I left UAL. After the birth of my second son, Scott, and a divorce, I returned to the workplace joining Sunset Designs, in marketing / sales and ultimately as a product manager for one division. After 4 years, and with the sale of Sunset Designs, I joined a start-up company, Incrediball, as VP of Sales and Marketing. When we sold this company I was hired by Glaze and Seal (chemical sealant company) as a consultant, and was eventually asked to take over the company as General Manager. During this time, I ran into a UCSB acquaintance, Tom Cundith, and we married in 1993. Between us we have 5 children, his son, and two daughters, my two sons and a total of 11 grandchildren. Both retired, we enjoy travel, fly-fishing, painting (me, in watercolors), and our grandchildren! We make our home in Pleasant Hill, Ca. My two sons live close by in Moraga where they were raised, and have challenging jobs in the media in San Francisco. As music is their second love, they have just put out a music CD for young children and received recognition as Best Toy, 2009 in the music division. Check them out at juiceboxheroes.com! (I am ever the marketer!) Look forward to seeing everyone in June. |

Mike Moyer:
After I got my degree in architecture from U.C. Berkeley in 1966, the San Diego draft board took a sudden interest in me. Hence I developed a sudden interest in the Peace Corps, where I served for 2 years in Guyana (long before Jim Jones) as an architect. After returning home, I bounced back and forth between San Diego and Berkeley, working as an architect an also a radio announcer for KGB in San Diego and KJAZ in Alameda. I settled in Mill Valley in 1973 and have been here ever since, running my own architectural practice since 1976. I married my wife Sherran in 1979 and a year later our only child Leslie was born, who is determined to save the world and just might do it. I enjoy my work as a residential architect and have no interest in retirement. Currently work is quite scarce, but I have been blessed with enough to keep me busy. Fortunately, Marin County is a relatively affluent area, and by now I have a pretty solid reputation. You can see what I've been up to on my web site moyerarchitecture.com. |

John Muncy:
Escaped from “The Rock” by joining the Peace Corps for an assignment in Varanasi (Banaras), India. My friends at the draft board liked the Asian resume so they volunteered me for the Army and a year in Vietnam. Survived and went on to graduate school in Phoenix for a Master’s in International Business. With degree in hand, wife (Mirja the Flying Finn) and trusty St Bernard dog, moved to San Francisco for a career in International Banking. A series of assignments followed spanning twenty years living in Manila, Bangkok, Singapore and Hong Kong. The St Bernard only made it as far as Bangkok but our two daughters, Maija and Annikki, grew up in Asia before returning to the US for university life. Fortunately Mirja was even more durable as she has survived countless moves and over 40 years of marriage. She had a great job as editor of a fashion magazine in Hong Kong which gave her entrée into a much better class of parties than those sponsored by bankers. Meanwhile I was putting in the annual 100,000 plus miles sitting on an airplane doing business in Southeast Asia. We left Hong Kong in 1999 and now divide our time between homes in Coronado for the beach life and Sonoma for wine country living. |

John Murphy*: I left CHS to join the Navy in 1959 and served 4 years. In August of 1963 I got lucky and Sally Anderson (CHS63) agreed to marry me. After my discharge I worked for Standard Oil then in 1966 went to work at North Island. I stayed at North Island until 1988 then moved to the Naval Special Warfare Command on the Amphibious Base until my retirement in 1996. After retirement I did a little Consulting and Contracting until 2004 when Sally and I moved Mt. Juliet Tennessee, just a little east of Nashville. Sally and I have been married now for 47 years ( Never thought I'd live this long much less be married this long) and have 2 kids, Kelly, married to Bobby Watkins one grand child Jake and Lance married to Imelda and three grand kids John, Fernando and last but not least Claudia. I like to play Golf, work around the house, keep the yard up and read. Not too exciting right!Sally on the other hand is on the move all the time. Sally shows her Art at various venues in both the Nashville and Mt. Juliet areas and in Art Shows Tennessee wide. In her spare thim she teaches art in Mt. Juliet. I get exhausted just trying to keep up with her. |

Having trained for the 1960 Olympic swim team in North Hollywood, I rejoined my family in Coronado for my one and only year at Coronado High: my senior year. During my college years, I studied art at the Instituto Sank Miguel Allende and at Stanford's campus is Guadalajara. Upon graduating, I did a 3 year internships an interior designer. After a brief stint as a cook on a charter yacht in St. Thomas, I went on to found my design firm here in Coronado. I have enjoyed a wonderful career, working with clients in San Francisco, Hawaii, Washington D.C., Hong Kong, and Shanghai in addition to my loyal clients in Coronado. Living in Coronado I participate in local organizations, I have been on the Board of Directors for Coronado Mainstreet, served on the cities Design Review Commission and for six years was Coronado's representative to the Port of San Diego's Public Art Committee. And as a member of the Port's sub committee to identify iconic art, we selected the Coronado - San Diego Bridge for an international lighting contest. This was presented to the Coronado and San Diego communities on 9 Jun 2010 to rave reviews. I have had the opportunity to travel extensively in Italy, India, and South Asia. Recently spending Novembers and Decembers with friends in Hong Kong. Last year I enjoyed a long visit to Cambodia, studying the art and architecture of the vast Angkor Wat. I still love living and working in Coronado and will probably never retire...... |

Marshall Nesbitt: After graduating from Coronado High, I attended Oregon State University, graduating with a BS in Chemistry. There I was introduced to the Pulp & Paper industry via summer work at Ketchikan Pulp Company in Ketchikan, Alaska. I spent 37 years in the Paper industry and retired in 2000. Along the way I earned an MBA from the University of Portland in 1976. In the early ‘70s, after leaving shift work, I began to lift weights regularly to keep from falling apart from a more sedentary work life. I began to compete in Powerlifting in the mid ‘80s. During the 23 years I competed, I earned 4 Masters National titles, and continue to hold most of the USA Powerlifting NC state records in the 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, and 60-64 age groups, all at 165 pounds. Prior to retirement from the Paper industry, I began to explore personal training certifications. After a year and a half of study, I tested for and became a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Assoc. Since 2003, I have custom designed individual resistance training programs for my clients and train them at my Strength Horizons Training Center in Plymouth, NC. Essentially I’ve become a “body mechanic.” I have 2 daughters, Tamra and Susan, from my first marriage, and 2 grandchildren, Lindsay and Rader. My wife, Sue, and I live in Washington, NC. While I likely won’t be able to attend our 50th reunion, I am enjoying reading the profiles. It doesn’t seem like 50 years! |

Keith Nichols: Right after CHS, I got thrown out of SD State and worked for a while on Catalina. I went with family to Tehran for 2 years (navy captain father in diplomatic post) and wound up teaching P.E. at The American School for a year. Hitchhiked around Europe for a year after that and decided to return to school. While attended S.D.J.C and living on J St. in Coronado, I learned that I was on the summer 1965 draft list. I got around that by joining the Naval Aviation training program, but after 2 years, I realized that although I loved to fly, I didn’t want to do it with the Navy. In 1968, I migrated into cooking & wound up running a couple of kitchens in Alaska & central CA. In 1973, I discovered hang gliding & jumped in with both feet. After a friend & I opened up a small custom shop in Solana Beach, Albatross Sails, I won the U.S. National Championships in 1976 and competed internationally for several years. In summer of 1977, I met Sydney, who accompanied me around the competition circuit that year. In the early 80s, I organized tournaments in the U.S., Guatemala, and the Himalayas of India. About this time I was considering a change, picked an economics degree in NYC and went to law school at UCLA. Upon graduation in 1987 (at 45), I went to work in D.C., where I ran into Sydney again after 11 years. We were married in 1989 in the church in Yosemite Valley. We continued working until 1997, when we took time off to do a bicycle ride from Seattle to D.C., after which we decided that was way more fun than working and we retired. In 2000, we moved to western CO, where we’re tucked away on 20 acres at 7,000’. We ski, we bike, we travel in our little motor home. After the alumni Gestapo finally found me, I thought if I ever go to a reunion, the 50th would probably be the most significant. It’ll be fun to see what paths other people have taken. |

After high school graduation I attended the University of Southern California on an NROTC scholarship, graduating with a BSME in 1964. Upon graduation I was assigned duty on a cruiser making my first deployment to Viet Nam, and then back again 2 1/2 years later assigned to a Vietnamese gunboat for a year. I was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service in connection with operations against the enemy. I was married, had three daughters, and ultimately divorced. After the Navy, I went to work for Ryan Aeronautical. With the exception of 14 months at General Dynamics I was there for 28 1/2 years and retired as Director of Operations Control at age 55. In 1992 I married my current wife Marilyn, and became stepfather to a son and daughter of whom I'm very proud. Since retirement we've traveled and enjoyed "The Rock." Since the 40th reunion, I lived in Mexico until March 2010. I am now back in Flagstaff, AZ. The photos, to the right, are from 2009 taken where I worked in Huatulco, Mexico. My main project was to write a book of Haiku poetry about the journey, "Streaming Fireflies." I am now getting ready to be published. I will keep you updated this summer on the web. I also paint, but for practical reasons I focus on the writing. After the warm waters of Mexico, it has been a big adjustment to be back up in the mountains. But, recently I struck gold. Found a swimming club where I go once a week and bliss out. So, deeply sorry I could not attend the fantastic 50th Reunion. But, I am fondly thinking of you! Anyone who wants to correspond, I will gladly write back. You can email, but I am also an old fashioned girl who adores letters in the mail. All the best to all of you. |

Paul Plumb:
Since 1960 I did the 5 year college plan graduating in 1965 with a major in Rugby and injuries. Fortunately the Navy needed folks, so I joined to be a pilot like friend David Anderson. After a couple of flights, which I survived, I thought I'd prefer to be a Frogman like Gerry Winant and because they played Rugby. Unbeknownst to me the water in Coronado's Pacific Ocean is really cold in the winter. Nonetheless, I finished UDT Training and began my 23 Navy SEAL career. It was fun as I got to go lots of places and meet lots of folks. I even married two of those folks... bad mistake, but it took me a total of 32 years (4 and 28) to figure that marriage was a bad idea for me. Highlights of my career included buying a house in Coronado and having four commands; the most significant of these was SEAL Team ONE here in Coronado. I did develop the highly quoted 3 laws of Plumb: 1. NOTHING is fair. 2. There is NO big picture. 3. EVERYTHING depends on timing. After the Navy and a brief career in making small fortunes out of larger ones, I was invited to join the very exclusive Island Beer Club (IBC) and am member number 6, Rugby Director. John Probasco: In 1949, following the death of both parents (father Cdr ’35 USNA), our mother’s sister, Helen, brought my brother Preston, sister Peggy, Granny Probasco and me from Port Washington, NY to live with her family. The Hansen’s: Uncle Leo, Aunt Helen (our guardians), their children – Lee Jr., David, Allen, and Mark ended up purchasing 711 A Ave. to house us all. The two families became one and we continue to count our blessings as children, grandchildren and friends still gather there regularly for various events including two Class of ’60 Reunions. I began my Coronado School years in Mrs. Willette’s 2nd grade class and after graduating CHS it was on to Pomona College, B.A. History/Religion, Claremont Grad School MA in Education, and some other Administrative and Special Ed Credentials. Got hooked on teaching elementary school while at CGS and continued on in Coronado, Maine, and South Bay (IB) for the next 40 years. Susan (Parker CHS ’64/SDSU ’68) and I married in 1967 and she also taught school in South Bay. For a few years, we lived on our boat at Coronado Yacht Club. Both our boys, Christopher (CHS ’92), and John F (CHS 2000), are now married. Chris and his wife Megan are Missionaries/ exchange student program leaders in Spain with one daughter Leila (1), and John and Suzanne live in Oregon with two sons, Jackson (4) and Finley (2) – John, Wells Fargo, Suzanne, Bridal Consultant. Prior to retiring in 2004, I had supplemented income over the years working part-time as a Yacht Broker and in 2004 bought and enjoyed operating Coronado Yacht Sales. In 2009, this all changed when we decided to join with our son, John and his family in purchasing a home in Lake Oswego OR to live together, supporting each other and seeing our grandchildren grow up. Unfortunately, it necessitated the selling of our home in Coronado, but we look forward up here to participating in our church ministries, travel (including visits to Coronado), boating, and especially enjoying the gorgeous natural surroundings. See you soon. |

Melodie Rappe (Francis): The morning after graduation from CHS my family moved to Boulder, CO. That fall, Polly Phillips came to be my freshman roommate at CU. College life was fantastic, and it was Polly who paved the way for me in many ways. We were both in the University Choir and we were both officers in our very active dorm wing. Polly went on to Stanford University and I stayed on at CU, graduating with a degree in education. My first teaching job was at a middle school in El Paso, TX. If you ever saw the movie "Up the Down Staircase" starring Sandy Dennis then you will understand what I went through. After that I only taught in elementary schools with my favorite teaching assignment being 6th graders in Boulder. In 19711 married Jim Francis and we moved to Arvada, a suburb of Denver. I then left teaching to raise our family and to volunteer at the Denver Art Museum as a docent. Jim and I were blessed with three sons -Jared, Greg, and Mike. During this family time I did substitute teaching and I indulged my lifelong fascination with Ancient Egypt by joining the Egyptian Study Society. When our youngest entered 5th grade I returned to full-time teaching. In 1996 I took a short leave of absence for a wonderful three-week study trip to Egypt, led by the famous Egyptologist T.G.H. James. In 2003 I decided to retire as our sons had all graduated from college, and two had already married. Many retired teachers in our district often will volunteer as school tour guides at Denver's Museum of Nature and Science, so I joined them. I also joined a dance group called the Rockyettes. We perform at nursing homes, retirement ceniers, churches, and service groups. Our best gig was at the Paramount Theater in Denver dancing the "Can Can" to Wurlitzer organ music accompaniment. The best part of retirement, however, has been the birth of our first grandchild. Jim and I are her chief babysitters as her mother teaches in Denver. We are anticipating more grandchildren and to babysitting them also. Since Jim is retiring from his job as treasurer for the Denver Presbytery, we are looking forward to doing some serious traveling. See you all in Coronado! |

Tom Rogers*: I went to school in Coronado from kindergarten till I joined the Navy in May 1958, from Dec58 to Jun62 - I was an Interior Communications Electrician on the aircraft carrier USS SHANGRI-LA, CVA-38. I received my GED in early 1959. I made one west-pac cruise (1959), went around the Horn in ‘60, made 2 Med cruises. I was discharged in Wash, DC (Jun62) during the Cuban missile crisis. It looked like we were going to go to war with Russia and I didn’t want to do it at sea. So I joined the Army, became a paratrooper then an Airborne Ranger. We never did go to war with Russia but, I did spend two combat tours in Viet Nam. First tour in 1965- 66 with the 1st Cavalry Division (A Co. 1st Bn. 7th CAV) and my second in 1969-70 with the 101st Airborne Division (L Co. 75th Ranger Rgt.) I got my High School diploma from the University of Hawaii in 1979. In Nov. 1980 I retired as a Sergeant First Class (E-7) with 22 years service. I moved to Pacifica, CA. I got a job with the San Francisco Municipal Rail Way as an electronics technician. In about two years I was a Electrical Transit Maintenance Supervisor.Retired again in 1995. Moved to Sierra Vista, AZ in 2003. I have been married for the past 33 years, I have two daughters and 7 grand children and one great grand child. I am an avid rockhound. I make jewelry from the rocks I find and occasionally sell some. I’m havin’ the time of my life. |

Jay Roudebush: After Coronado I went on to Occidental College and graduated from Oxy with a double major in art and history. Because my draft status was 1A on graduation day, I opted to go to Navy OCS in Newport, RI. I spent three years on active duty, two as a COMM Officer aboard the USS Luce (DLG 7) out of Mayport, FL.
In 1968, I earned a teaching credential at San Francisco State University, and began teaching the following year at All Saints' Episcopal Day School in Carmel, CA. After three years at ASDS and another four at Robert Louis Stevenson School in Pebble Beach, my wife, Marlene and I moved to Washington, DC, where we still reside. Since 1977 I've been a teacher or administrator at a number of private schools, including Sidwell Friends, Congressional Schools of VA, Norwood School, another year at All Saints' as an Interim headmaster, nine years as Headmaster of National Presbyterian School and the past three as a 6th Grade teacher back at Norwood. Next year (2010) will mark my 40th--and final--year of full-time teaching. Whew!

Holly Ryan (Kaufman): Although one of "the Navy kids" I was lucky to attend Coronado schools off and on for 6 years. Kindergarten: was spent in some building near the town library. School nurse checked for head lice. 1st Grade: a boy named David with dark hair and great-smelling hair pomade always chased me on the jungle gym at recess. 5th Grade: Mrs. Wilkins' class (Jeff's mom - pregnant with Maria the first part of the year. A substitute with lots of silver/turquoise bracelets took over. Square dancing for P.E in the auditorium - "Duck for the Oysters, Dig for the Clams".Kick Ball/ Baseball - last to be chosen - afraid of the ball? 6th grade: penmanship lessons with black ink in a bottle and pens with scratchy nibs. Do any of us really have better handwriting for the endless push/pull/ circles?? The best part was The Standard School Broadcast music appreciation lesson every Thursday morning over the intercom, while we had free drawing time. 7th Grade(Jr.High): struggled in Math with Miss Colton. Made up a very unkind song about her to the tune of "The High and the Mighty," John Wayne movie out that year. Hopeless in Home Ec - trying to sew an apron, but enjoyed being Lady Rowena in the "Ivanhoe" play. The school years in between were spent in Washington, DC, Havana, Cuba, Long Beach, CA, Norfolk, VA and Ottawa, Canada. I was thrilled to end up in Coronado for my Senior Year - a highlight was being in "The Glass Menagerie" play. Having come full circle, to be able to reconnect with former classmates, made it a very special year. From there I went on to Mount Vernon College (Wash., DC) and San Jose State (elementary teaching credential). Bill Kaufman ('60 classmate) and I were married in 1966, we moved to Marin County, and I began a 40 year teaching career - mostly 3rd Grade. We have two children - son Ryan, and daughter Kristi. Both are married, have families, live nearby, and we get together often. Three grandchildren: Max (9), Isabella (7), and Reilly (4 months). I've been "retired" from teaching for three years, but enjoy volunteering 3 days a week at my old school, where my 2 older grandchildren are students. Over the years Bill and I have been busy with church activities, including working on many Cursillos (retreats), Kairos (prison ministry) teams and Kairos Outside. Even though I've lived here for 44 years, I still regard Coronado as my hometown. (Don't we all ??!!) You "Townies" had it good! |

After leaving Coronado in 1960 and graduating summa cum laude from University in three years. I left for England as a Fulbright Scholar and supplemented my income as an exotic dancer. Happily married, I had two highly intelligent, talented, beautiful children, and now I have two highly intelligent, talented, beautiful grandchildren. Now happily divorced and retired from my career as a rocket scientist, I divide my time between So. California and my Villa in Italy with George Clooney. |

I am enjoying retirement from the Coronado Unified School District. Much of my time is given to working with Christian Women’s Ministries, and pursuing fine art digital photography. I am an avid supporter of traditional jazz, and founder of the Kenton O. Smith Traditional Jazz College Scholarship through the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society Foundation. This scholarship provides funds to help with tuition for music majors throughout the United States. My husband and I are fortunate to have a second home in St. George, Utah, near Zion National Park. We do a little traveling and particularly like riding on tourist railroads, and exploring the back country in our Jeep. We are blessed by an extended family of friends. Life is good. See you in June. |

Cherry Snider (Morton):
The best things in my life are John, my husband, and my daughter, Kirstin. I finally graduated from Cal in 1966, after traveling both to Europe and Japan. I married, crossed the Atlantic in a 42 foot sail boat (with Mary Hildreth and her husband, Gary aboard), climbed many mountains (including Fugi, Ritter and Whitney), rode horses and did a little accounting work… divorced, moved to Santa Rosa, CA, bought a horse, did a lot of horseback riding (50 and 100 mile trail rides), married again, had Kirstin, rode some more, got a real job in accounting, divorced again. Following this I moved to San Francisco with Touche Ross and Co, stayed there four years before returning to Santa Rosa, horse back riding, completing an AA degree at the JC and becoming self emploved. Sheila Hildreth remained a very good friend through all of this. In 1995 I took the epic ‘Prague I Trip’ with John, Janet Moore, and Steve Johnson. My brother, Fred (CHS ’59), was living in Prague and loaned us his car. Prague trips continued through Prague V (Janet dropped out, Marge Engle considered joining us but did not). Prague VI was just John and me… We were married shortly after our return. Life in Coronado has been delightful, especially with so many classmates so close at hand. |

Sue Taylor (Puttkammer): Shortly after graduating from CHS in 1960, I married the Love of my life, Stan Jadovitz. During the course of our first six years of "Joint Effort" we had Kim, Adam, John Joseph and Angie — Blessings All. We lived in Poway, Calif. In 1989 Stan was diagnosed with Leukemia; he was given 3 years. We lost him Feb. 15, 1992. We had 32 wonderful years. Ten months later, Jack Puttkammer and I met at a picnic and fell in love. He had 3 children; Pam, Rick and Kurt. I'm sure you've heard the phrase "When God closes a door, He always opens a window." Jack Puttkarnmer, my 2nd chance for much love and happiness. We were married a short 17 wonderful years. We lost this wonderful man to congestive heart failure, discovered too late, on July 23, 2009. Now my family has grown from 4 to 7 children, 8 grandchildren to 17 grandchildren. And my daughter Kim is about to become a grandmother, making me (ouch) a Great Grandmother. I have three married grandchildren, Jack has one. We made our home in Sierra Vista, AZ in 2001, along with Paul and Shirley Puttkammer, Brother & Sister-in-law.

JoLynn Van Dusen (Aguirre): JoLynn's college years were spent in various places. She attended college at B.Y.U. in Hawaii, San Diego State University, U.C.R., Cal State University in San Bernardino, and Belles Artes in Mexico. After working in commercial art for twelve newspapers and for San Diego area schools as a teacher (pre-school thru junior college), she moved to the Coachella Valley. She and her husband raised six children, while she taught Special Education as a Resource Specialist. During the past seven years, she has danced with the Mexican Ballet Folklorico Sol del Desierto. She remarried four years ago to Antonio Aguirre (who is 40 years younger than JoLynn), from Oaxaca, Mexico. JoLynn will retire from teaching in June. She will then devote more time to her hobbies of painting on canvas and dancing, and to her nine grandchildren. |

Martha "Kate" Wakefield: I was born in Coronado, had 13 years of school here, and then went to UC Berkeley. Graduated in 1964 and lived in Berkeley, France, Albany (NY) - I organized our 20th reunion from there, Orange (CA) and Forest Grove (OR) and am now back in San Diego County, living in Rancho Bernardo. I have three sons and two daughters and also have seven grand-children, five boys and two girls. I love being a mother and am very proud of my children and their spouses. Oldest son works for Oracle, middle son is a cross-country / track coach at the Claremont Colleges, and youngest son works at Borders while looking for a teaching job. One daughter went to Yale Law School and the other went to the London School of Economics and has done volunteer work in Africa twice. Their spouses include a stay-at-home mom, a lab technician, a lawyer, and a librarian / archivist. Youngest child is not married. My oldest grandchild will be a junior in high school in September (2010). Eek! I love to travel. I've been to all 50 states, and in 1998 I went around the world. My favorite places: Mt. Rushmore; Washington, DC; London, Paris and the Taj Mahal. I am currently single, a much nicer word than divorced. Also, I go by Kate now.

Wilma "Grace" Warden (Nicodemus):
I was born in Coronado June of 1942 while my dad was listed as missing in action as a Navy pilot in the Pacific War. I went to school through high school in Coronado and then married a Navy guy, had two children, was divorced and found myself a single parent in Houston, TX in 1973. I slowly began to learn the ropes of the commercial real estate business and by the early 80s I had my own investment firm and was doing motivational speaking on a national tour. I managed to get both children through college and then the oil market crashed. I met my husband in 1987 and I changed career directions to join him as the business partner in a biomedical engineering consultation firm doing injury causation analysis. More recently we began a solo medical practice in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine in Monterey, CA. Along the way I completed my undergraduate degree and attended ministerial school in Missouri where I was ordained as a Unity minister in 2007. We have four adult children, six grandchildren and one great grandson scattered from Las Vegas to Houston to Bay City, Florida. |

From a phone chat with Polly Phillips (Vasche)... Attended Coronado grades 7 thru 10. He and his wife own and operate aptartment complexes in Santa Barbara and have busiest time during reunion, so cannot come. He was a biochemist and she a physicist; he was both Senior Class Pres. and ASB Pres. at the HS he attended after CHS, in a blue collar area of Concord, CA. Four of his 125 classmates went to college; he went to Stanford; he and Ann have taken up piano in recent years, but their true passion is Art. It was great to talk with Gerry. |
